The article presents research to determine if there is an association of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation with prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital length of stay in critically ill people without suppressed immune systems. Researchers assessed CMV plasma by the polymerase chain reaction technique and outcomes in a cohort group of CMV-seropositive adults with fully working immune systems at one of six ICUs at two separate U.S. hospitals. Risk factors were assessed by multivariable logistic regression and proportional odds models. It was found that reactivation of CMV occurs frequently in this type of patient and is associated with a prolonged hospital stay of more than 14 days. |
