Abstrakt: The article reflects on the approach used by universities and colleges in teaching undergraduate linguists and the scientific approach used by linguists when they get to the field. During her undergraduate studies, the author states that she docilely learned what her linguistics professor taught her, and at the same time, reading hungrily everything she could outside the course readings. When she went to the field, after graduating, she discovered that there are eloquent and committed people who literally hated white linguists, and were convinced that a major part of the decline of their language was due to the passage through their lives of a previous generation of linguists and anthropologists.
