Treatments For Reducing Photochemical Degradation of Cotton Cellulose.

Abstrakt: It has been shown that simple immersion of cotton duck samples in water provides some protection against photodegradation of the fibers during subsequent exposure to radiation from a carbon-arc light source. This is explained in terms of the concept that the arrangement of cellulose molecules in ordered regions of the fibers is altered by treatments with some liquids. Fibers, swollen in this way, are believed to reflect a higher proportion of near UV, incident light. Three derivatives of ferrocene have been investigated as UV absorbers which might protect cotton duck against photochemical degradation. Mono- and di-benzoylferrocene, when absorbed on cellulose fiber surfaces, reduce photochemical polymer chain scission with an effectiveness proportional to their relative photostabilities, rather than in relation to their molar extinction coefficients in the near UV. On the other hand, ferrocene sulfonyl groups, chemically bonded to cellulose, act as photosensitizers of photodegradation. This is explained in terms of the inability of these ferrocenyl substituents to harmlessly dissipate absorbed energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
