Abstrakt: The ability for AI controlled humanoid agents to interact and resonate with the user and with each other in a social and emotional manner is of the utmost importance for creating a sense of plausibility, immersion and ultimately enhancing user experience. In order to express themselves effectively, agents will need to be adept in a broad range of communicative verbal and nonverbal behaviors based on internal models that are not incoherent with their human counterparts. In this work, we present a number of avenues of research that we feel help enhance agents abilities to communicate socially and emotionally. The core of this work consists of models of attention and emotion which are augmented with communication management and behavior expressivity control. The work presented here has particular potential as a basis for supporting, at a low-level, individual agent behavior driven by high-level specifications from dialog systems in the next generation of human-user interfaces.
