Almost alt analytical schemes used in fiber and fabric finish analysis involve Soxhlet extraction and the use of significant quantities of organic solvents. Since many schemes are gravimetric methods, 100-200 mL of waste solvent are produced with each determination. Both environmental and safety concerns have resulted in an increase in the interest in the development of alternative analytical methods which would significantly reduce the use of these solvents. Recent studies using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with unmodified supercritical CO2 have shown that SFE could be used to extract and quantify many of the different classes of organic compounds commonly used in fiber and fabric finishes. The objective of this research was to demonstrate the use of SFE with CO2 as an alternative to Soxhlet extraction. The results indicate that SFE can be successfully used to replace Soxhlet extraction in a wide range of textile and fiber applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
