The article discusses the three developments in Quebec cinema and television in the early 1990s. First, starting 1991, three major tele-series have dominated the field of narrative television. Second, tension is reportedly building up between film and television community on the one hand and Quebec government's funding agency for film and television production and distribution. Third, is the emergence of public discussions, leading up to a referendum on Quebec's constitution in 1992, on the relations between ethnic and linguistic identities. The author argues that these developments show that cultural industries in Quebec are the key drivers in the production of national formation. |
