This article examines British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish film cultures and their political and cultural parameters that may provide a framework for thinking about national film cultures. This paper considers the contemporary political significance of nationalism and national identity, as well as the crucial relational concept of core and periphery. It looks at cultural and institutional contexts wherein national film cultures may develop. A national film culture should make sense of the conditions of that nation and of the forces that shape it. Film culture in Scotland continues to be institutionally identified with filmmaking. |
