Abstrakt: The article discusses the use of propeller fans at Fairmount Mineral's Maiden Rock underground sand mine in Wisconsin to address ventilation issues. The mine is located adjacent to the Mississippi River near the north end of Lake Pepin. In order for the mine to meet ventilating requirements from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, there is the necessity to base the quantities of air required on the size of the underground equipment fleets, the types of equipment and the sizes of the diesel engines used. Three ventilation system alternatives were considered for the mine: first, employment of ducting to carry ventilating air to the mine operating areas; second, the use of mine openings as air passages; third, the establishment of an intake ventilating air shaft.
