Which incoming prisoner characteristics assist in identifying those likely to commit disciplinary infractions? The authors answer this question using data on six categories of self-reported rule infractions from the 1997 Survey of Inmate in State and Federal Correctional Facilities. Logistic regression analyses run on these data showed that gender-male, evidence of mental problems, prior drug use, previous adult and juvenile incarcerations, past physical abuse, and family members' history of incarceration were associated with an increase in rule violations, while older age, marriage, and employment were associated with lower levels of prison misconduct in US prisons.
