Abstrakt: This article discusses possible U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS). According to the authors, global warming and Arctic sea ice melting could open an ice-free Northwest Passage by 2040 which increases competition for Arctic resources. The U.S. is the only major power which has not ratified UNCLOS and thus it cannot claim an extension of the continental shelf. The Russian Federation and Canada have already claimed natural extensions of their seabeds based on geologically related ridges and islands. The authors conclude that U.S. ratification is essential to make, negotiate and dispute claims.
