The article reports on the plan of Lockheed Martin to start tethered hover pit tests of the first F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing (Stovl) version in April 2008. The F-35B Joint Strike Fighter will be used by the U.S. Marines to replace both the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet and Boeing/BAE Systems AV-8B Harrier II, while Great Britain and Italy also plan to use the supersonic Stovl combat aircraft to replace Harriers. Doug Pearson of Lockheed Martin explained that the company plans a cautious build-down to vertical flight from conventional flying. |
