The article discusses a study which investigated the utility of arterial base deficit (BD) and increase in lactate (LAC) in diagnosing traumatic brain injury (TBI) in patients with isolated head injury. Findings revealed that 17 percent of patients sustained penetrating TBI, including stab and gunshot wounds, while 83 percent sustained blunt trauma. Results of computed tomography (CT) scan of patients' head showed cerebral contusions, skull and facial bone fractures, subdural and intraparenchymal hemorrhages, and cervical spine fractures/disclocations. |
