Abstrakt: The article discusses Smert' Shpionam (SMERSH), the Soviet Army's counterintelligence service during World War II. From the period between 1943 and 1946, SMERSH rooted out alleged spies and disloyal military officers and soldiers and helped Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin hold power over the western Soviet Union. Also discussed is the history of SMERSH's founding, and its chief, General Viktor Semenovich Abakumov.
