Abstrakt: The article evaluates recent advances in enzyme catalyzed stereoselective C-C bond formations in water with the use of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) dependent enzymes. These enzymes, which are capable of acyloin-type condensation reactions in water under mild conditions, include acetohydroxyacid synthase, benzaldehyde lyase, benzonylformate decarboxylase, pyruvate decarboxylase, and phenylpyruvate decarboxylase. These TPP-dependent enzynmes lead to chiral alpha-hydroxy ketones, which are the building blocks for the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
