The article focuses on the methods on selecting leaders used by the political parties in a parliamentary system of government in Great Britain. According to the author, selecting leaders can be grouped into four main heads which includes emerging a leader as a result of informal processes of consultations within the party, selecting a leader by party's MPs and selecting a leader at the party conference. He added that the first of the four methods has never been used by the British Labour Party but formerly used the second, currently uses the third and may adopt the fourth method in the foreseeable future. He emphasized that one of the proposed reforms in Labour Party is a reduction of the union's role in the party and increase the part played by individual members. |
