The article determines where Islam and democracy diverge and intersect. It examines the cases of Algeria, Iran, Pakistan and Sudan as examples of situations where the dialectic between Islam and democracy manifests itself. It attempts to use the human rights conditions of the stated countries as a basis for analysis. It is concluded that the disparity between rhetoric and reality in Muslim countries reflects the chasm between the prescriptive-normative values of Islam and empirical-legal order and institutions in some Muslim nations. |
