Abstrakt: The C. L. R. James Institute was created in 1983. It is the only agency for which James formally authorized the use of his name. It is devoted to collecting, cataloguing and distributing the work of C. L. R. James. I have directed it through three stages. First was the myriad publishing, cultural and media projects in London of the mid-1980s, working closely with James' assistant, Anna Grimshau', and his publisher, Margaret Busby. Next was what I call the Blackwell period (1987 to 1995). working as archivist and typesetter for a series of books edited by Anna Grimshaw. In the late 1990s the Institute has expanded its holdings into a broad range of subjects and attracted scholars from around the world, including scholars who are not focusing on James. It functions like a Special Collections Department of a research library, except that it is committed to public access. The catalogue of its uniquely comprehensive and detailed database will be published as The C. L. R. James Resource Guide by Cultural Correspondence in 1999. Its authors are myself and Ralph Dumain. The Institute is affiliated with the African Studies Centre of the University of Cambridge. It organizes a range of scholarly activities including a Fellowship programme. a colloquium series, a media series, and a variety of publishing endeavours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
