The article focuses on the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, under the leadership of geologist Vivian Fuchs. It informs that in 1949, head of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, Fuchs hit upon the idea of reviving explorer Ernest Shackleton's grand plan of a trans-Antarctic crossing. It is stated that Fuchs planned to establish a base, Shackleton, on the Weddell Sea, Antarctica to be maintained during winter by an advance party led by surveyor Kenneth Blaiklock.
