This paper tests a multicausal hypothesis: is there evidence that the proportion of university students who are female, crossnationally, is influenced by levels of economic and cultural development and by types of political systems? Economic and cultural development are measured by energy consumption and library volumes per capita, respectively. Individual states are categorized as Marxist-Leninist, non-Marxist authoritarian, or polyarchic systems. Multiple regression results for two intervals (1975, 1985) reveal substantial impacts of both economics and politics. Statistics also reveal greater variability of outcomes among authoritarian regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
