Abstrakt: This article assesses the role the American city, with all its ills, plays in blacks' survival. The authors ask: What does the renewal of the American city entail? At what cost are the structures of the city to be revitalized? And what is the cost to black people of the renewal of the city? The authors' hypothesis is that the renewal of the city carries in its wake clear and present dangers to the well‐being of black people, dangers which could occasion generic harm and, perhaps, irreparable damage, to the structure of order and civility of life in the republic. Attention is focussed on the city as a fulcrum of black power, both potential and actualized. In the conclusion, the authors recommend strategies for black survival in the city.
