Abstrakt: The article discusses the substantial and healthy population of Canterbury mudfish, classified as nationally endangered, which occurs in the Waianiwaniwa River catchment in New Zealand. It is estimated that mudfish occur in at least 24.3 kilometer of the Waianiwaniwa River, making the catchment the most important refuge known for the conservation of the species. It is concluded that the presence of a significant population of Canterbury mudfish in Waianiwaniwa River is the result of a combination of unusual conditions where natural fish predators are excluded and competition from other fish species is reduced by poor water quality seasonally.
