The article explores the progress and major unresolved issues toward the realization of the smart plant vision in the process industry. The industry is involved with the conversion of raw materials, through a series of chemical processing steps, to valued products and is a key economic sector in the U.S. and globally. A paradigm that couples plant management with process feedback control is depicted. It has been widely adopted by the process industries and extensively studied by the process systems engineering community. The article also discusses the main research challenges that need to be confronted and addressed to make the Smart Plant paradigm a reality. |
