Abstrakt: The system of education in agriculture in Iran has not been effective enough in its provision of human resources to facilitate substantial changes in rural areas over the last few decades. This paper explores the challenges to the staff in the College of Agriculture at Razi University in introducing an alternative educational programme. Methods of teaching and learning participation, which lead towards a participative and democratic method of education in higher education are established, uncommon to a developing country. Kolb's and Mumford's learning cycles and their shortcomings are considered. These are then compared with those of the staff who have their philosophy of education firmly rooted in Iranian history, culture and context. The article argues that an experiential, dialogic and appreciative approach to teaching and learning will prepare competent, self-reliant and participative students ready to contribute to policy-making and working in the marginalised and impoverished areas of the country.
