The section of "The Production of Man-Made Fibres" focuses on polyolefin fibres. The growth of polyolefin-fibre production has been very much encouraged by the wide availability of polymer from several large producers who are not committed to polyolefin-fibre production, but have provided assistance in the form of technical service to their many customers. Polymer-manufacturing technology is mostly identical with that for polymer for plastics use, the main difference being the molecular weight. Polyolefin fibres contain no dye-receptive sites, so that the only dyestuffs that can be used to colour the unmodified fibre are the very limited hydrocarbon-soluble types. |
