The article discusses the origin and discovery of the giant sirenian, also known as Steller's sea cow. The name Steller's sea cow were named after to naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, the one who discovered the sea cow during 1741. The number of the species were believed to have decreased from a wider North Pacific range to a relict population living around the Commander Islands which had never previously been inhabited by humans. During 1768 the species had been totally exterminated by human predation, although hydrodamalis had ranged from Baja California to Japan during before the Pleistocene. |
