Abstrakt: The article features the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles, California. It is known to be a study collection with over a million photographs, paintings, sculptures and architecture that developed a unique component in the J. Paul Getty Museum Herb Garden. It is claimed that these special collections support new scholarly practices in art history and the humanities and suggest new ways of thinking about the way collections of photographs represent the history of photography. The Getty Research Institute's photo-archive was a product of its history in which the photographs assembled for the original photo-archive and were acquired by curators to act as surrogates for the original objects.
