Abstrakt: An essay is presented on the definition of bone quality given during a recent U.S. National Institutes of Health conference. Bone quality was defined as the sum total of characteristics of the bone that influence the bone's resistance to fracture. It discusses the flaws of the definition such as those regarding the inseparability of bone quality and bone mineral density (BMD). It stresses that bone quality must only be used to denote the capacity of bones to tolerate loads without breaking.
