The article discusses how textile artists depicted the iconic imagery of self-referential textiles. The fiberart created Anne Hamilton is an example of a work based on conceptualizations of textile materials and/or processes. To create visual and physical texture, Hamilton used various elements, such as pennies, eucalyptus leaves and folded shirts, in repetitive orderings. In Virginia Davis' Tartan, the ikat process is expressed. In the embroidered pieces called Hand Me Down by Tom Lundberg, the image which is represented by floating garments is transformed into an iconic symbol. In the installation piece Remembrance by Lisa Kokin, the shirts become a recognition of an individual's imprint, both physical and psychological. |
