The article explores influences and developments in artists' books. According to the author, the history of books commonly follows the line from cave paintings, to clay tablet, to papyrus and to animal-skin scroll. With technology imported from Asia, the first handmade paper developed from cotton and linen rags started to be made in Europe by the 13th century. The author mentions that influential figures in book arts were observed to come from a background in fibers. Hence, the first handmade-paper mill at an academic institution in the U.S. was established at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1963. |
