Abstract Two negative controlled GCP studies of identical design were conducted in adult mixed-breed dogs to evaluate the efficacy of imidacloprid-containing formulations when used at the minimum therapeutic dose to treat an existing natural infestation of dog lice (Trichodectes canis), and to control lice infestation for five weeks, following a single topical administration. In each study, twenty adult mixed-breed dogs were divided into two equal treatment groups. Animals assigned to one group were treated with 0.1 ml/kg body weight of either imidacloprid 10%(study 1) or imidacloprid 10% + moxidectin 2.5% (study 2) on study day 0, the other group served as untreated control. The efficacy of treatment was assessed at the two days following treatment and subsequently in weekly intervals up to five weeks by comb counts on predefined sites. The results show that a single topical administration of imidacloprid 10% when applied in a mono or in a fixed combination formulation with moxidectin 2.5%, at a dose rate of 10 mg imidacloprid/kg body weight is effective against dog lice (T. canis). In both studies, efficacy was > 95% two days following administration; and 100% (imidacloprid) or > 99% (imidacloprid + moxidectin), respectively, from one week until five weeks following administration.
