The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in a random sample of the Southwest Albanian adult population. Stratified random sampling was used to select 3709 (1966 males and 1743 females) individual volunteers from the Southwest Albanian towns and villages in the years 2005-2006. The subjects were evaluated at the outpatient clinic of the military hospital of Gyrocaster in Albania, which is run by Hellenic and Albanian doctors. Personal information and medical history were obtained by the medical stuff of the hospital. Diagnosis of diabetes was made using the WHO criteria. The mean age of the subjects was 49 ± 18 years (range 20 to 103 years). A total of 155 out of the 3709 subjects (4.17%) had T2DM; among them 47 (1.26%) had unknown T2DM. The mean age of the subjects with diabetes was 61 ± 12 years. Prevalence of T2DM in the rural Southwestern Albania was 4.18%. This rate is slightly lower to that reported in the urban areas of the country (6.3%) in the year 2001. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
