From the five native species of sturgeons inhabiting the Slovakian rivers until the beginning of 20th century, only the sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) and the resident form of the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) remained. The sterlet, of which fishing is allowed, is found in the Danube and in the lower courses of some of its larger tributaries. The Russsian sturgeon is limited to the Danube proper, it is extremely rare and considered to be critically endangered. Data on the morphology, age, growth, and food of sterlet are similar to those for this species from other river basins. Population density of the sterlet in the Danube River seems to be higher than 40 years ago due to the improving water quality. Artificial propagation of juvenile sterlet for stocking in Slovakia started in 1989 and since 1992 is carried out regularly by three organizations. Stocking is performed predominantly into the Danube River. Methods of the artificial propagation are described along with proposals for conservation and protection of sturgeons in the Danube River.
