Diabetes is recognized as a serious health problem and is dramatically increasing in Korea. The purpose of this study is to compare pre-DM with DM patients in the anthropometry, hematological variables, and dietary intakes. The subjects were recruited from a diabetes clinic in Seoul and classified into pre-DM(FBS<126mg/dl) and DM groups(FBS≥126mg/dl) based on fasting blood sugar. DM patients showed significantly higher weight and serum triglycerides concentration than pre-DM. Intakes of energy, protein and fat were significantly higher in DM than in pre-DM. But, serum concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were not different between two groups. Since obesity is a serious problem in DM patients, subjects in each group were sub-divided into OB(obese, BMI≥25kg/m²) and NOB(non-obese, BMI<25kg/m²) according to BMI. No significant differences were found in waist-hip ratio, %body fat and serum concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and HDLcholesterol between OB DM and OB pre-DM. In conclusion DM showed higher weight and serum triglycerides concentration than pre-DM, however, effects of obesity on anthropometry, hematological variables were not differ in DM and pre DM groups.
