Abstrakt: Chapter 1 of the book "The Flash of Capital: Film and Geopolitics in Japan" is presented. It focused on the story of Ichikawa Danjuro IX, the kabuki actor who starred in the oldest remaining Japanese film "Momijigari" made in 1899. It is said that Danjuro found it so strange to see his own image staring back at him, that he did not view the film until the following year, when a screening was held at his private residence. It also addressed the emergence of modern subjectivity in the film.
