The article discusses a study which indicates that psychiatric patients can be trained in behavior that will improve their social skills. Schizophrenic patients who participated in a day hospital program and concurrently received social skills training showed symptom reductions that were more durable over a six-month follow-up period than patients who were in the day program but who did not receive social skills training. The increasing weight of evidence from controlled studies in both hospital and community settings has documented the efficacy of structured and behaviorally oriented rehabilitation programs for chronic schizophrenics. |
