The article examines the potential psychotropic effects of compounds that interact with brain serotonin receptors. The therapeutic potential of serotonin antagonism in schizophrenia is discussed. The effectiveness of pipamperone, setoperone, ritanserin and R 64 766 in treating schizophrenic patients is discussed. The successful application of serotonin antagonists has supported the view of those who claim a substantial role for both dopamine and serotonin in chronic psychosis. It was concluded that risperidone appears to comply fully with the requirements of psychiatric practice. |
