An essay is presented that focuses on gay playwright Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Chicago, Illinois' Trap Door Theatre opened its 2006-07 season with a production of Fassbinder's "The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant." The play, which tells the story of a Petra, a female fashion designer who falls in love with Karin, a young woman, focuses on the dynamics of a lesbian love affair. The stage set for the production is described. Fassbinder, who is known as the "bad boy" of New German Cinema, has also directed motion pictures such as "The Marriage of Maria Braun," "Veronika Voss," and "Querelle."
