Abstrakt: The article discusses how Meredith Betterton, a physics assistant professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, is asserting that small lab version of 3.7 m snow spikes that form naturally on some high mountain glaciers could someday aid scientists in reducing the effects of global warming in the Andes. An overview of Betterton's experiment with the spikes, known as penitentes, is presented.
