Abstrakt: While ego growth is stimulated by tolerable narcissistic injuries (disappointments) from a gratifying caretaker, the needs of both participants in therapy may conspire to ward off the recognition and therapeutic use of the disappointments intrinsic to therapy. Case material is used to illustrate some of the dynamics that dissuade and promote address to the disappointments in therapy and to illuminate the consequences of these alternative therapeutic strategies.
