The article cites a study that tested the genetic contribution to schizophrenia in Oregon. Researchers separated the effects of an environment made schizophrenogenic by the ambivalence and thinking disorder of a schizophrenic parent from the effects of genes from such a parent. A group of adults born to schizophrenic mothers where mother and child were separated after the first two postpartum weeks were compared to a group of control subjects. Results of the study supported a genetic etiology of schizophrenia, which was found only in the offspring of schizophrenic mothers. |
