The article presents a study on self-mutilation of female psychopaths in a psychiatric hospital. According to the author, gross lacerations are often inflicted without the patient appearing to experience any suffering, which may involve some kind of hysterical anesthesia. A separate investigation was made on a group of patients who had not demonstrated the behavior in the previous year and on the patients that consistently indulge in self-mutilation during the same period. The results showed that the main goals of self-mutilation include attention-seeking, prestige gaining, and tension reduction. It also pointed that self-mutilation had a contagious quality, with widespread imitation and identification. |
