This article discusses a study which examined the effects of race, gender and fandom on audience interpretations of Madonna's music videos. Some scholars observed that popular media contain discourses of domination such as capitalism and patriarchy. Others argued that a media text may only be popular if it can provide its audiences the sense that their meanings are related to dominant ones. The music videos that were examined in this study included "Papa Don't Preach" and "Open Your Heart." These music videos were chosen because of its portrayal of sexuality. |
