From the clinical membership of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), 618 randomly chosen subjects were mailed a questionnaire containing closed and open-ended questions. Three mailings yielded a response of 377 participants (a response rate of 61%) for testing the major hypothesis that the users and non-users of paradox are characteristically different. Of the respondents, 76% were users of paradox. Users tended to be trained more recently than non-users. The two groups were similar in terms of educational level and other demographic factors. Four types of paradox were compared. Symptom prescription was rated the most widely, followed by positioning, restraining, and ordeal. Further questions about paradox were explored.
