Abstrakt: The article discusses the threat of a pre-emptive nuclear strike by the Soviet Union as perceived by the U.S. Risk perceptions, technical and geopolitical factors as well as possible nuclear war scenarios have also been discussed in the case of such an event. The development of MX nuclear missiles by the U.S. was considered an integral part of acquiring first strike capability. It is suggested that if Soviet Union undertakes a pre-emptive nuclear strike it would be designed to inflict irrepairable damage to the U.S. strategic command and nuclear retaliation capability. The possibility of inaccurate functionality of missiles is also analyzed which can give rise to completely different situations. It might not be possible to prepare for all these scenarios in advance.
