Abstrakt: The article presents suggestions on how healthcare providers can deal with patients without a proxy. Caring for patients tend to be hard when the patient do not have relatives or surrogates who can participate in the medical decision-making process. Two approaches in addressing such situations are the participation of a single decision maker and of a committee. The single decision maker may be the attending physician or medical personnel working at the patient's hospital. Cases of two nursing home patients are discussed.
