Abstrakt: The purpose of this article is to identify the functions of symbols in the rhetoric of social campaigns. Working from a semiotic perspective, 208 social campaign symbols were analyzed for both their visual content and their use in campaigns. This study found that symbols have 4 primary functions: explanation, awareness, identification, and sanction.
