Abstrakt: This article reports on results from the Canadian Cardiac Randomized Evaluation of Antidepressant and Psychotherapy Efficacy, a blinded controlled trial testing the efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on patients with coronary heart disease. Between 17% and 27% of patients with artery disease also suffer from depression and it can inhibit recovery. This trial documents the effects of citalopram in conjuction with psychotherapy in reducing depression among patients. The results strongly suggested the safety of using SSRIs on heart disease patients but a larger trial is needed to determine if its use can lower cardiac events.
