The article discusses the role of the government in influencing the Department of Energy's (DOE) cleanup strategy in the nuclear site in Hanford, Washington. The DOE had established the Office of Legacy Management to complete cleanup projects and to demonstrate accountability for long-term management of risks in place. State regulators, stakeholders and tribes emphasized four long-term stewardship issues that must be addressed by the DOE as remedial action, waste disposal, and closure decisions include funding, viability of institutional controls, information management, and accountability. |
