The article discusses the association of chronic mucus hypersecretion to the habitual cigarette smoking and uncertainty of the relationship between mucus abnormalities and airflow obstruction in smokers. The epithelial mucin stores are increased in habitual smokers for the goblet cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia and the pattern of mucin gene expression is abnormal. Furthermore, the highest epithelial mucin storage are found in smokers with airflow obstruction. |
