Abstrakt: This article presents an analysis on the determinants of long run development of welfare states in industrial societies. The data utilized in the studies covered the post World War II period up to the early 1970's. The fiscal crisis in the 1970's plagued the development of welfare states in most capitalist countries, accompanied with the rise of neoconservatism in some countries as an attempt to resolve the fiscal crisis. It also examines some recent studies on the policy responses of welfare states to the fiscal crisis of the mid-1970's and 1980's.
